Alert button for undocumented immigrants to report arrests still does not work 100%

The alert button ConsulApp With Youa phone application created by the Mexican government for undocumented Mexican immigrants to report possible detention to family members and consulates, faces its own challenges, as it can only be used on Android phones at the moment. “For now it only works on Android phones, but we hope that in the coming days it will be activated on Apple phones,” said Carlos González Gutiérrez, consul general of Mexico in Los Angeles. He recalled that the alert button is an additional mechanism of the many created by the Mexican government so that migrants can come into contact with them. “ConsulApp With You It is an application that is part of the menu of options offered by the Mexican government. It is a mistake to call it a panic button because it is not a button for help to arrive immediately but rather a button to contact the consular network.” He stressed that it is useful for those who use their smartphone to solve their daily lives, and are used to doing it through apps. “In fact, when you get the app, you have to register, create a profile and add emergency contacts. People can update that application according to their needs to include family members they want to contact in case of an immigration emergency,” said the consul. He noted that another option to report any situation is to call the Information and Assistance Center for Mexican People (CIAM) at 520-623-7874, which operates from Tucson 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Through CIAM, we receive reports of people lost in the desert, which allows us to mobilize border patrol rescue units as well as other requests for urgent assistance. There are also our social networks and WhatsApp accounts because we try to be as accessible as possible because we are aware that the good consul is an accessible consul.” The Mexican diplomat mentioned that the migrant protection strategy under the Trump era has included reinforcing visits to migrant detention centers in the city and county of Los Angeles. “We are also monitoring social networks and the media. Part of our work will be to combat misinformation. “We are experiencing a favorable environment for people to promote misinformation.” He advised that one must first verify and validate what one hears about possible raids. “The first thing is to get reliable information and turn to official sources such as the Mexican Consulate. Our job is to provide people with information so that they can make an informed decision.” He stressed that his message to the Mexican immigrant community is not to rush and turn to official sources of information. But he also said that they should keep their documents current and in a safe place, and recommended that they obtain dual nationality for children born in the United States. “A third piece of advice is to analyze your prospects for immigration regularization in the future, based on a conversation with an expert. In that, the consulate can help them have a first diagnostic session with an immigration lawyer.” He emphasized that it is very important that if they are Mexicans and are detained, they know that they have the right to remain silent, contact their lawyer, and the Mexican Consulate. “My last advice is that you do not sign any document without the presence of a lawyer; “Do not open the door of your home if an officer knocks on your door and does not present a search warrant.” Do not spread false information The migrant representative for California, Maribel Solache, said that migrant legislators are in unity with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum and Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente on issues of migrant protection. “In Mexico these are times of women and migrants, and we are supporting with everything. The only thing we ask of our countrymen is that they do not spread information about raids and migration operations that are not proven.” Other measures The alert button consists of sending a signal to the family members that the migrant has previously registered and to the nearest consulate. Other measures that the Mexican government has taken to protect migrants are the hiring of 329 lawyers to provide legal assistance, increasing presence in migrant detention and processing centers; and streamline administrative procedures at consulates.

Health in the United States: What to expect from the Trump Administration

During his previous campaign for the White House, Donald Trump made promises to roll back regulations established by his predecessor, Joe Biden, and he began to execute them from day one. His focus on health matters during this new mandate ranges from regulations aimed at reducing health care coststo the spread of the coronavirus, expansions of the Affordable Care Act and protections against gender discrimination. Some of the big changes expected in the health of the United States: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Secretary of Health and Human Services Trump appointed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of Health and Human Services. Due to his anti-vaccine stances and public health theories, this position has been questioned by many and 18,000 signatures have been submitted in the Senate to reject his nomination. Despite the criticism, Trump has expressed confidence that Kennedy Jr. will lead health agencies toward “greater transparency and effectiveness in the fight against chronic diseases.” Kennedy advocates for reducing pollutants and protecting environmental health. For this reason, regulations are planned for chemical products used in food and the environment. The now Secretary of Health has reiterated his concern about mental health in the country and assures that it is an “urgent crisis in the country.” For this benefits are expected in the accessibility of psychological care, integrating mental health programs into communities and reducing the overprescription of drugs for mental disorders. United States exit from the WHO The 47th president of the United States ordered that the country begin the process of withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), which he holds responsible for the mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has been regretted by the organization, who claim that together with the nation they have saved millions of lives around the world. Medicare, Medicaid and drug prices The mogul also revoked an executive order that prompted the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to create three drug pricing experiments that have yet to fully take off. This would affect these three areas: Payment for cell and genetic therapies Pay less for drugs that receive accelerated approvals from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Offer generic medications for common chronic diseases for a flat $2 copay. Covid: treatments and vaccines Trump reversed several Biden policies aimed at tackling the Covid-19 pandemic and preparing the country for future infectious disease outbreaks. All were issued in 2021 amid the crisis and aimed to boost Covid-19 testing, treatment research, provide economic relief and improve cooperation with other countries in the event of another pandemic. Affordable Care Act Trump rescinded Biden’s executive order that provided longer enrollment periods for Affordable Care Act plans in most states and additional funding for third parties that help people enroll in ACA insurance. Immigration A report by cnn highlights that Trump’s promise to implement drastic measures against immigration “comes at a time when the United States desperately needs more workers to care for the growing ranks of senior citizens.” “We have a group of older adults who will live longer than ever and will need and require access to care and services,” said Nicole Howell, director of workforce policy at LeadingAge, which represents more than 5,400 people-services nonprofits. seniors, including nursing homes and home care providers. Sex and gender During his inaugural address he revealed a series of health and education policies that establish protections for LGBTQ+ people and transgender people in particular. “From now on the official policy of the United States government will be that there are only two genders, male and female,” he said. Among the orders rescinded this Monday include a 2022 policy against discrimination against people based on sexual or gender identity that mandated support for LGBTQ+ students and ordered officials to end programs that promote so-called conversion therapy both nationally and internationally. Likewise, Biden’s orders to promote protections based on sex and gender identity in schools as well as the law to establish the Gender Policy Council, initially chaired by Jennifer Klein, an alumna of the administrations of the Obama and Clinton. The private firefighters that the rich in Los Angeles hire to save their properties from fires (and the criticism that this generates)

Image source, Getty Images photo caption, The fires in Los Angeles have required all the resources of firefighters. Item information Author, Dario M. Brooks Author’s title, BBC News World January 18, 2025 In the midst of the emergency in Los Angeles, a request for help placed in X by a businessman uncovered a controversy a few days ago. Keith Wasserman, a CEO of an investment firm, wrote on the social network: “Does anyone have contacts with private firefighters to protect our house in Pacific Palisades? We need to act quickly. All the neighboring houses are on fire. We will pay any amount. Thank you” . Your house in Pacific Palisadesone of the neighborhoods where wealthy people live and which has been one of the most affected by the fireswas under threat of fire. Shortly afterward it was learned that it was consumed by flames. But Wasserman’s request for help from private firefighters generated a lot of criticism, from those who rejected the availability of resources to fight fires to the highest bidder, to those who considered it unethical to send workers to risk their lives. “So you’re suggesting that potentially vital (even ‘private’) resources be diverted to save your house because you’re rich while tens of thousands of people are trying to evacuate?” questioned a user identified as Renny. “The nerve is incredible… His family is evacuated and he tries to hire private firefighters to risk their lives to save a house that is probably insured,” wrote Sam Vance in another response to Wasserman’s message, who after criticism deactivated your account. However, what Wasserman was requesting is a private fire response service known for several years in Los Angeles and other parts vulnerable to this type of emergency in the United States. In fact, in that same city in 2018 another controversy arose after Kim Kardashian and her then-husband, Kanye West, hired a private fire service to protect their home in Calabasas from a forest fire. Kardashian then defended herself against the criticism, pointing out that the out-of-pocket hire not only saved her $50 million mansion, but helped her neighbors. Image source, Getty Images photo caption, Private fire control services primarily do preventive work. Specialists point out that private hiring of firefighters is more unusual than the current emergency makes it seem. The firms regularly serve businesses, insurance companies and, in the least cases, small clients. This is confirmed by Deborah Miley, director of the National Wildland Fire Fighting Association, which represents more than 300 private firefighting firms. Miley explained to the newspaper The New York Times that almost half (42%) of the firefighters in the United States are hired by this type of company. Joe Torres, from the private services company All-Risk Shield, explains to BBC Mundo that this is his case. “It’s usually an annual subscription. We do a lot of property preparation work long before any fire hits,” he explains. Although the law prohibits these companies from interfering with emergency operations, there are some that can offer their resources on their own. What do private firefighters offer? The firms, of various sizes, have tankers of different capacities, as well as fire crews and experts in protecting buildings against fires, forestry or other types. Regularly retired firefighters join the ranks of these companies. They use their own resources, including water, since they are prohibited from connecting to public service hydrants. In California, a law to regulate these services that emerged in 2018 – after the Kardashian and West controversy – even prohibits these services from having vehicles that look like red emergency vehicles, or that interfere with public operations. In the current emergency in Los Angeles, some private firefighters have been seen guarding residences in wealthy neighborhoods. According to reports, prices vary: from those who offer their services for US$2,000 per hour, to those who guard a property for between US$10,000 and US$14,000 per day. photo caption, The BBC saw several private services guarding residences in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Emma Vardy, a BBC reporter sent to cover the California emergency, found tankers from private companies doing preventive surveillance in the Brentwood neighborhood. “These can only be paid for by the very, very rich,” Vardy said. “There is a small army ready to protect these homes of very, very rich people. People have questioned how ethical this is while there are schools and homes of ordinary people that have been destroyed. And with public fire services in crisis,” he reported from that neighborhood, which still did not have an imminent threat of fire. But the current emergency has put many in the city in a difficult situation. More than 12,000 structures – including homes and businesses – have been consumed by the fire that has devastated some 16,000 hectares, between natural areas and neighborhoods such as Palisades, Eaton or Altadena. Unlike Wasserman, other businessmen have managed to save their properties. The case of real estate developer Rick Caruso has been cited in various media, as he hired a service that traveled from the neighboring states of Arizona and Oregon to protect his residence and a small shopping center in Pacific Palisades. Image source, Getty Images photo caption, Private services offer teams with trucks of different capacity and number of rescuers. BBC Mundo requested comments from the Los Angeles authorities about the private fire operation, but at the time of publication of this article it had not received a response. David Acuña, one of the spokespersons for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, explained to CBS News, a BBC partner in the US, that private firefighters do not respond to emergencies in general. “We do not want nor are we going to delegate to private firefighters the operations that we have to carry out with complex coordination,” he said. To provide help or not? When hired, employees of these private companies prepare property in an area vulnerable to wildfires with controls on the ground: clearing vegetation or flammable materials that cause flames to reach … Read more
