Japan’s biggest enemy has left a $90 billion bill in the nation’s pocket: climate change

Few things are more accurate in understanding a problem that affects everyone than appeal to the stomach. In March of last year, Japan woke up to news that made more than one person raise their eyebrows. Wasabi was experiencing a “bittersweet” moment (curry rice tooin fact). The reasons stemmed, first of all, from international demand due to the success of the nation’s cuisine. However, there is not enough wasabi on the planet to satisfy everyone, and part of the blame lay with a usual suspect that threatens many of the planet’s crops: climate change. The last bill of the nation is an announcement to sailors. The economic catastrophe of climate change. Japan, a country with a long history of natural disasters, faces an unprecedented increase in the costs derived from climate change. Despite its recognized expertise in risk management and disaster resilience, the country continues to suffer some of the highest economic losses on the planet. To give us an idea, according to a report from the International Chamber of Commercebetween 2014 and 2023, Japan accumulated Climate-related losses totaling a whopping $90.8 billiona figure only surpassed by the United States, China and India, nations considerably larger in population and territory. Not only that. The projected future costs are even more alarming. An analysis conducted last December estimates that if current global climate policies continue, Japan will face damages worth a total of 952 trillion yen (about $6 trillion) until 2050a figure that far exceeds the nominal value of its current economy, estimated at 591.9 billion yenaccording to the Cabinet Office. The problem of not being able to stop it. As we said, Japan’s disaster history is extensive, with devastating events like the Noto earthquake in 2023, Typhoon Hagibis in 2019 either the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in March 2011. In this regard, recent warnings about a possible megaquake in the Nankai Trench have further highlighted the constant threat facing the country. In fact, the nation ranks sixth in the Disaster Risk Index of the telecommunications company Intersec, which evaluated the economic and human losses of almost 160 countries between 2000 and 2024. The country registered total economic losses of 2.35 billion dollars and 543 fatalities and/or injuriesadjusted to its population of 124 million. Image of the 2011 Tsunami The “urban” layout, another problem. Furthermore, the pattern that we see in all natural disasters such as those that occurred in l is repeated. The Los Angeles fireseither DANA in Valencia: Inhabited areas in disaster-prone areas. In the case of Japan, the combination of its extensive coastline, the high concentration of assets in densely populated urban areas and the scarcity of natural resources make it a highly vulnerable enclave to large-scale disasters. Despite these risks, Japan has managed to mitigate the loss of life by advanced risk management strategiesas early warning systemsresilient infrastructure and emergency response plans. However, the economic costs continue to increase exponentially. The price of inaction: it is urgent to take action. They told in Japan Times A week ago, the impact of climate change is also increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in the country, such as floods, typhoons and forest fires. In this regard, a study by the International Chamber of Commerce analyzed almost 4,000 extreme events that occurred between 2014 and 2023, concluding that Global economic losses amounted to 2 trillion dollars. Japan was among the most affected countries, with economic costs higher than those of Germany (although below those of India). The impact in Japan. Economic losses resulting from natural disasters amounted to 320 billion dollars worldwide last yearof which only 140 billion were insuredaccording to the report from the insurer Munich Re. This figure represents the fifth largest loss since 1980 and is significantly higher than the averages of recent decades. In Japanese terms, it is expected that Climate change will reduce the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by almost 10% annually if more ambitious policies are not adopted to mitigate its effects. In fact, an economic model from the Asian Investors Group on Climate Change estimates that Total economic losses until 2050 will reach 970 trillion yenwhich is equivalent to the loss of hundreds of thousands of yen per Japanese household annually. By then, projections indicate that Japan will be more affected than the United States and Europe. Initiatives and adaptation. It is possibly the big question facing Japan and the entire planet, what can we do to mitigate disasters or adapt? In that sense and despite the gloomy perspectives of the studies, the Times emphasized that Japan has the potential to lead the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through development of innovative technologiessuch as advanced batteries and offshore wind energy. According to a recent report, if the country adopts a net-zero emissions scenario by 2050, the economy could benefit from a boost of 13.6 trillion yen annuallyplus savings of 40 trillion yen per year compared to current climate policies. In addition, Japan has also taken a leading role in funding international initiatives to help vulnerable countries. For example, has contributed $10 million to the United Nations Loss and Damage Fundaimed at mitigating the impact of climate change in developing nations. Insurance and the Japanese pocket. It is the last leg of that global enemy, one that directly affects the nation’s pocketbook. Japanese households are already experiencing the impact of climate change through increased insurance premiums. In October 2024, the country’s four main insurers increased fire insurance rates by an average of 10%marking the fourth increase since 2019. Furthermore, Japan’s General Insurance Tariff Organization has explicitly linked these increases to the increasing risk of disasters induced by climate change. Additionally, and according to climate campaign group Insure Our Future, climate change-related disasters accounted for more than $600 billion in insured losses between 2002 and 2022. Data and more data, figures and more figures, which only highlight the urgency of more effective climate action to avoid or mitigate greater economic and social impacts of a common enemy. ESA has a plan against space debris, but it needs help

The problem of space junk It’s getting more and more serious. Fragments of parts used in space missions are left wandering around the Earth until, at best, they deorbit and they return to our planet, burning as they cross the atmosphere and reducing to ashes. But other problems can also occur. For example, in the time they remain floating in space they can collide with each other producing a domino effect or, directly, collide with a satellite or even with a ship or space station. Furthermore, upon returning to Earth they may not burn sufficiently and escape the control of scientists on Earth, falling in unexpected places and causing accidents. For all this, the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched a plan aimed at finding a way to reduce trash in space to zero. It won’t be easy. In fact, some technologies are required that do not yet exist today. However, ESA has warned that this is not the biggest challenge of their plan. The most difficult thing will be to obtain the necessary collaboration of other space agenciesboth public and private. Everyone must agree to put measures in place to end space debris and they must do it together, informing the rest of the companies of each step. That will be the most difficult, because even though today we no longer talk about a competition as marked as when the United States faced the Soviet Union, all agencies want to be first and, to do so, sometimes they forget about the common good. That is the first thing we will have to work with and, without a doubt, it will be even more difficult than creating cutting-edge technologies capable of eliminating space debris. Why is the problem of space debris so serious? As explained in Universe Todaythere are billions of pieces of space junk orbiting Earth, and more than 25,000 of those pieces they are bigger than 10cm. It may seem that 10 centimeters is not enough, but that is enough to produce a dangerous crash. The space is immense, but the area occupied by all those pieces is not that large. They are all in orbit around the Earth. For this reason, it would not be difficult for them to collide with each other or with some object of human construction that is still in operation. These pieces can have many origins. Some are remnants of explosions during missions gone wrong. Others are objects that had a long useful life; but, once their mission was accomplished, they went out and were left to wander around the Earth. There are also remains of rockets that, once the ship they propelled was released from the Earth, were stranded in space if they did not manage to fall into the Earth. There are even smaller fragments from the ship propulsion launched from our planet or from the breakage of other larger pieces due to collision with space objects or exposure to the space environment. There is everything. Some of those objects pose a risk in space, but others pose a risk here on Earth. Space debris can cause a dangerous domino effect. According to a study published in 2022there is a 10% risk of a piece of space debris falling on a human being in the next decade. This would happen if, as we saw before, deorbits uncontrollably. At the moment it has not happened, but there have been cases of fragments of space debris that have fallen near human constructions. Or even inside. When this happens, space agencies try to wash their hands as much as possible. For this reason, at ESA they consider that international cooperation, although essential, would be very complicated. What is the ESA plan? The ESA plan consists of two parts. The first is based on prevent the release of new space junk and the second in the elimination of what is already in space. For the first, they point out a first measure that consists of using special coatings in all pieces that are launched into space. These would be responsible for preventing these pieces from being damaged by the passage of time in the inhospitable space conditions. They would also protect them from possible crashes. Thus, the release of small fragments by degradation. The second proposal to avoid releasing new space debris consists of using new forms of propulsion. Many of those currently used release small fragments in the process that later become space debris. For example, options could be tested based on the electromagnetism. A lot of research would be needed, but ESA considers it viable. Of course, they also propose better surveillance of everything that is released into space. There must be constant monitoring systems. It is not valid to leave free pieces to their fate without any type of control. As for the removal of space debris that is already accumulating, the measures would be even more complicated, but not impossible. New technologies would be needed capable of deorbiting in a controlled manner those fragments that, in monitoring, prove to be dangerous. There are already some inventions along these lines and, although they are not widely used, the first prototypes have been very promising. Collaboration is essential to eliminate space debris There are already companies, public and private, that have their own mechanisms to release less space debris. However, the majority are still a kind of spacewashingwhere they wash their faces with small measures that do not even equal the damage they do on the other hand. Image of the Starship debris just a few days ago. This is, for example, the case of SpaceX. Elon Musk’s company has been researching the use of reusable rockets. This is very useful to prevent the accumulation of space debris. However, it continues to launch thousands and thousands of satellites into space that could become space debris and, furthermore, it does not stop carrying out test flights of its ships, knowing that many of them will go wrong and release garbage into space. … Read more

the challenge of finding 500 billion dollars for the largest AI project

He Project Stargate announcement This week was surprising for many things, but above all it was surprising for one: the 500,000 million dollars that will theoretically be invested in the next four years to achieve its objectives. The figure, absolutely colossalhas generated many suspicions. And rightly so. 100,000 million to start. Of that total figure, the announcement made it clear that the companies that provided the capital would invest “100 billion dollars immediately,” but even that does not seem easily achievable. SoftBank and OpenAI, those who will invest the most. In The Information reveal that SoftBank and OpenAI will contribute $19 billion each for the Stargate project. Bloomberg duck that both will also be the ones that will have the most participation in the final company: each will have a 40% participation. Musk attacks, Altman defends himself. The announcement of the project provoked a quick reaction from Elon Musk, who stated in X that “Actually they (the companies involved) do not have the money). He later added that “SoftBank has less than $10 billion guaranteed. I have good sources.” Sam Altman responded to those allegations hours later indicating that the data that Musk provided was “Incorrect, as you probably know.” Musk and xAI compete with OpeenAI and maintain a long rivalry, but here Altman surprised further telling Musk that “I truly respect what you have accomplished and believe you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our era.” SoftBank under review. Analyst MG Siegler indicates in your newsletter that SoftBank has about $30 billion in cash. It seems to have room for that initial investment, but there are other data that work against it. As indicated user David Manheim on X, SoftBank’s investment fund has had notable failures in the past. On Wikipedia you can see how SoftBank Vision Fund lost $27.4 billion in 2022 due to several failed investments led by Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank. Among them is the investment of 100 million dollars in FTX, which then collapsed. OpenAI burning money. There are also questions about OpenAI’s ability to invest that amount. It is true that it has raised significant sums in the latest investment rounds, but the company is a money burning machine. Arab money and debt as exits. As the aforementioned Siegler article reveals, an important part of that investment may come from the United Arab Emirates through MGX, the investment fund. Another option is to resort to debt, which has already been very common in SoftBank’s investments (they have 150,000 million invested with that formula). Meanwhile, OpenAI looks for other girlfriends (Oracle). The project is also revealing other parallel movements. In The Wall Street Journal They highlight how OpenAI is beginning to look for options for its alliance with Microsoft, something that both have admitted. At OpenAI they complain that Microsoft does not give them the computing power they need, and they seem to be testing alternatives like Google. Perhaps Oracle is also among the candidates, especially now that it will be one of the participants (along with NVIDIA) in the creation of the large data center in Texas. It seems clear that OpenAI wants to not depend so much on Microsoft (or anyone) and Stargate may be a vehicle to achieve this. The FIA prepares new sanctions for drivers in 2025 after cases like Verstappen’s

The FIA, the highest regulatory body of motorsports, has decided to apply a drastic change in its disciplinary rules for the 2025 seasonwith the aim of avoiding “verbal excesses” and bad behavior among pilots. After a series of incidents that occurred during the last season, including some conflicts between the drivers and the FIA, such as the one carried out by Max Verstappenthe regulator has renewed its code of conduct and has prepared more severe sanctions for those drivers who violate the new guidelines, according to Auto Motor Sport. The main change that the FIA will implement in 2025 is related to the language and attitudes of drivers both on and off the track. In accordance with Article 12 of the FIA International Sports Code, starting this season, expressions that include vulgar, insulting or rude language, whether written or verbal, will be severely punished.. This includes not only the racist or sexist commentsbut also any other expression that is considered rude, offensive or degrading. The definition of what is considered “offensive” will be broader, allowing FIA stewards to judge each situation with greater flexibility. The regulations also extend these sanctions to gestures and signals, expanding the way in which pilots can be punished. Fines for drivers will be multiplied by four compared to other categories, meaning that a simple offense could cost up to 40,000 euros in the case of a first offense. Max Verstappen, at a press conference in Singapore Reuters This amount could increase up to 120,000 euros in case of recidivismFurthermore, if a pilot commits three infractions of this type, he will face a one month suspension from all competitionsas well as a deduction of points in the championship standings. These measures could have a significant impact on the drivers’ title aspirations, making these sanctions a key factor in the dynamics of the 2025 season. Furthermore, the FIA has decided to no longer tolerate public criticism of its decisions. Drivers who make comments that are perceived as an attack on the FIA or its members, in any format, may also be sanctioned. This includes criticism directed at the FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayemor to any member of the organization. In fact, the article explicitly mentions that any statement that causes “moral damage” to the FIA or affects the integrity of the sport will be penalized. Verstappen, in the spotlight The Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappenwho has been known for his blunt and sometimes controversial comments, could be seen especially affected for these new sanctions. The Dutch pilot has already been fined and forced to carry out community work in 2024 after using inappropriate language in an interview, and his attitude towards the FIA has at times been defiant. Many wonder if Verstappen and other drivers of the caliber of Lewis Hamilton either George Russell They will abide by these new rules without resistance. On the other hand, some drivers, such as the aforementioned George Russell, have already expressed their disagreement with the way the FIA handles certain situations, and it would not be surprising to see an increase in tensions between drivers and the regulatory body during the 2025 season. . The new FIA sanctions will undoubtedly affect the dynamics of the 2025 season. Although the main objective is to maintain respect and discipline in the competitions, there is also the risk of creating an atmosphere of tension between the drivers and the organizers. Competitors’ freedom of expression could be compromised, and this could lead to controversy both on and off the slopes. In summary, the new measures adopted by the FIA represent a major change in the way misconduct will be managed in Formula 1.

Hughes Fire causes evacuation of 31,000 people in Southern California

Firefighters in Southern California are tackling the Hughes Fire, which continues to expand, which has forced the evacuation of thousands of people in the region and caused the evacuation of at least 31,000 residents. After starting on Wednesday, this fire has consumed more than 10,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), this fire is barely 14% contained, CNN reported. Located north of Santa Clarita, in the community of Castaic, the fire has led to the evacuation of around 31,000 residents, while another 23,000 have been advised of the possibility of evacuation, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. David Acuña, Cal Fire battalion chief, reported that, so far, no material damage or injuries have been reported. “As we progress through the day, we will be able to better evaluate the situation,” Acuña said. Red flag warning will be until Friday Meantime, The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning that will extend through Friday morning for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.. The combination of Santa Ana winds and extremely dry vegetation creates a high risk that new fires could emerge in the region. David Ortiz, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, noted: “The Santa Ana winds are blowing against this fire, so we had that in our favor.” However, firefighters are still working hard to make sure there are no hot spots left that could be revived by the wind. “We continue to expect some dry moisture and then possible wind gusts up to 60 mph.”Ortiz warned. “It’s very dry. Any spark can cause a new fire to start and spread quickly.” The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning that will extend through Friday morning for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The combination of Santa Ana winds and extremely dry vegetation creates a high risk that new fires could emerge in the region. Israel Reyes defended Messi after a mocking celebration for Mexican fans

The celebration of Messi to Mexican fans, boasting about Argentina’s three World Cups, has divided opinions. The last one to come out to speak was the defender of Club AmericaIsrael Reyeswho justified and defended ‘La Pulga’. In an interview for ESPN, Kings was questioned about last weekend’s episode in the Allegiant Stadium of vegas. The Mexican fully analyzed the situation and ended up offering arguments why he believes Messi did nothing wrong. “I’m going to tell you something, I didn’t realize it, because I was obviously angry about the goal, I didn’t realize it, in the end everything happened, some teammates took such a photo of me, and I saw them later.
