‘A Minecraft movie’ is becoming such a large phenomenon that is causing disturbances in cinemas

‘A Minecraft movie’ is in its second week in cinemas and we can stop considering it a day flower: His monumental box office He has already made it the film that has raised the most in what we have been from the year. But there are more: the passes are becoming authentic jungles, with disturbances, interrupted passes and a long etcetera of phenomena that have nothing passenger. We are facing the most noticeable movie of the year … although for reasons that have nothing to do with their quality. Second weekend. 80 million dollars in the United States has raised, which represents a 50% drop with respect to its overwhelming 162.7 million debut, but remains a figure that makes the film the success of the year: it has already been raised 550 million in the world, advancing to ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. The film has given a very welcome thrust to a loose box office for this start of the year and gives the starting gun for a series of expected successes: ‘Thunderbolts’, the new ‘impossible mission’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ The most popular game in history. Although the first advances were badly receivedkneading a spectacular amount of Dyslikes In Warner’s official channels on YouTube, there is a different phenomenon, but comparable to that of the film of ‘Super Mario Bros‘: A failure between median critics and spectators, but a success among its target audience. It is actually pure mathematics: ‘A Minecraft film’ is aimed at a number of potential spectators of 300 million (it is the last official sales data, October 2023), and many of them are responding to the call. Not everyone plays. And those 300 million (which today will be many more) are multiplied by a very simple issue: many of the game fans They do not playbut they consume videos related to the game. It is calculated that could be tens of thousands of Streamers of the gameeach of them with their own thousands of followers, who are not necessarily players. Recall that there are 600 million registered players (the fourth most popular game in the world). It is a real land paid to take the Z generation to the rooms. A complicated phenomenon to adapt. ” Minecraft ‘has successfully brought to the big screen part of its aesthetics, but it is a not very easy task on paper. This creation of Markus Persson and now owned by Microsoft (by 2,500 million wing) It has openly rudimentary but very versatile graphics, which allow constructions of all kinds to be carried out, and without pressures: for many players, the attractiveness is simply to enter the game and build, which has undoubtedly been key to attract very young users. Fanaticism was triggered in the early last decade, before even the launch of the first official version: At that time he already had 16 million players. The infinite. In fact, the secret that, on the way to two decades after its launch, the game remains fresh and attracting millions of players are the thousands of mods, mostly free, which generate new ways to interact with him. Not only that: the ability of the game to generate communities makes it essentially a collective game and, a large part, lacking the central narrative. What, beyond its values as a film, makes this Warner bet a considerable achievement: they have turned an experience into a narrative. And successfully. The key to success: the winks. The reason why ‘a Minecraft movie’ has become a success is because it speaks of you to you with the players: overflow memes and tributes to the games that the staunch fans know how to decrypt, of the phrase “As a Child, I Yearned for the mines” to the iconic sound bang of the game, work of C418. And above all, to Chicken Jockey, a apparently harmless meme and is generating an unexpected response among the young audience of the film: disturbances in the movie theaters. A liberating cry. The cry of “Chickn Jockey!” comes from the scene streamer. There is only 5% chances that a zombified character will self -generate on the stage just above a chicken, creating the illusion that he is riding it. That is why it is so weird and is celebrated when it happens in a streamand hence the chain reaction that this character has unleashed when appearing in the film, and that went viral when he was filmed by a spectator, in the first weekend of life of the film, with a mobile. Followed by an explosion of jubilation of the spectators. The chaos. In an unheard of situation (since the time of ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show‘Even the most recent’WICKED‘Public participation in projections is not entirely strange). The Descriptions and Videos of what happens in the rooms are Out -control projectionswith notices to the police and people putting in the fireworks artificial or, of course, chickens. The latest manifestations of the phenomenon have been starring the own Jack Black asking for calm In a surprise appearance in a projection, a New Jersey room warning that they will only allow the assistance of minors if they are accompanied and a poster of disclaimer warning the spectators of the consequences if they do not behave. Cinemas ON FIRE. The subject will still give us to talk, because the box office and success guarantees it. For example, they begin to proliferate 4xd projections Where the Berraco behavior (except for the part of introducing farm animals, dirtying the armchair or that the cinema burns) is more than welcome. At the moment, he leaves criticism in an awkward place when explaining these phenomena, because they are not an extravagance without further ado: they belong to the highest grossing film of the moment. Do we embrace chaos or cry out about the end of culture by moving the spectators of the consequences if they do not behave. Large technological ones begin to turn with their investment in data centers

Everything was frenzy in the data centers segment a few weeks ago. The Big Tech fought to see What is the one that was spent more money facing the theoretical (and inevitable?) AI revolution. Microsoft was one of the champions of this bet, but the panorama is changing, and there are those who talk about how the segment has been oversized. 2 GW less. As indicated In BloombergMicrosoft has abandoned its plans to create several new data centers in the US and Europe. The joint power of these projects would be 2 GW according to analysts of the TD Cowen firm, and the reason attributed to the decision is singular: now it turns out that there is an excessive supply of clusters dedicated to artificial intelligence. Or what is the same: there will be enough data centers dedicated to AI. There is already talk of a “bubble of data centers”. Joe Tsai, president of the Chinese group Alibaba, He warned these days precisely from the potential existence of a bubble of data centers for ia. To this millionaire fever for these ambitious projects begins to seem indiscriminate, and highlighted how in some cases there may be no clear clients to direct those resources. Plan to invest 52,000 million dollars in data centers, but within three years, therefore therefore of the 100,000 million dollars of Amazonthe 80,000 of Microsoft, the 75,000 Alphabet or the 65,000 finish In a single year. An exaggerated demand is being screened. This manager also spoke of the hypothetical investment of 500,000 million dollars of the Stargate project. “I think, in a way, people are investing anticipating the demand they are seeing today, but they are projecting a much greater demand (of which there may be).” China in fact accumulates unfortunate data centers. In Microsoft they relax their strategy. Redmond’s firm, said these analysts, has made this decision shortly after loosen ties with OpenAicompany in which it has invested around 13,000 million dollars. That will cause the company led by Sam Altman to go to cloud services of other partners. Google and Meta take the opportunity. The withdrawal of these projects assumes that Microsoft has annulled some of those contracts and postponed others. Interestingly Google and Meta seem to have taken advantage and have appropriated some of the projects that Microsoft has abandoned in Europe. The details of the projects from which the firm has been withdrawn are not known, and neither if that change of plans could affect projects already signed such as data centers They are already announced in Aragon. We already have enough. A Microsoft spokesman indicated in a statement to Bloomberg how the company has already made a significant investment. “While we may reduce or strategically adjust our infrastructure in some areas, we will continue to grow strongly in all regions,” he explained. “This allows us to invest and assign resources to growth areas for our future.” In recent times we are also seeing how climbing no longer compensates so much, and GPT-4.5 is a good demonstration of it. What about ambition. At the beginning of the year we knew that Microsoft expect to invest 80,000 million dollars throughout fiscal year 2025 in the construction of new data centers. These intentions are maintained according to their spokesman, but they hope that the growth rate should slow down the next fiscal year, and the efforts will focus on filling those server data centers and other equipment. Figure creates a system to make large -scale humanoid robots. And of course, there will be robots manufacturing robots

We had something forgotten to robots, but for A few months We don’t stop to return to hear about them. There are important efforts from companies such as Nvidia – who just put All meat on the grill-, Boston Dynamics or Teslabut there is another company that is pushing strong in this sector. It is called Figure, and has just announced a promising project. Botq. This is the name of the mass manufacturing platform of humanoid robots Announced by Figure. The idea is simple: to create a totally oriented infrastructure to that production of high volumes of robots that end up being used in all types of scenarios. 12,000 humanoid robots per year. The first generation of Botq will be able to produce 12,000 humanoid robots a year, but the company highlights that this is only the beginning “and we will climb considerably from there.” Manufacture with vertical integration. The company will control the construction process and its quality to ensure that the robots that end in the market have according to them the highest quality. They have also been working on software solutions for months to attend these high volume manufacturing processes. Robots building robots. The Humanoid Robots of Figure They already caught our attention last summer, and now these robots will participate in the manufacture of other humanoid robots. That, they say, will happen this year, but in addition “the number of humanoid robots involved (in manufacturing) will grow substantially over time to increase the automation of production lines.” By the way: Elon Musk has an identical idea. Figure 03 on the way. Its current humanoid robot was complex both in necessary elements and in manufacturing processes, but with it they have learned how they can reduce the number of components and how to improve production. And more efficient processes. Thus, instead of CNC machines they will use techniques such as injection molding or pressure foundry that allow “thousands of hours of manufacturing.” In fact, in some components that needed a week to be manufactured with CNC machines, times have gone from only 20 seconds. Telefónica’s plan to convert their networks into platforms against large technology

In a huge stand of the MWC 2025 Get chaired by the slogan ‘Leading Change, Inspiral Progress’, Telefónica has deployed its arsenal of corporate alliances around Open Gateway. Chema Alonso, visible face of the digital transformation of the Teleco, has presented a series of agreements that allow to glimpse the real strategy of the operator: convert their networks, so far mere highways, on platforms that generate income. An old yearning. He has not done it alone: the presentation has been a parade of managers of several companies and institutions supporting the projected. Open Gatewayin fact, it is not new. The GSMA initiative has been promising to transform telecommunications networks into open platforms through standardized APIs. And according to GSMA data, it is present in 28 markets. What is most striking is the accelerated rhythm with which Telefónica is closing agreements: more than 50 large companies and 20 commercial partners, according to the numbers that Alonso has shared. Chema Alonso during the presentation of Open Gateway at the MWC 2025. Image: Xataka. Among the most important ads is The expansion of your collaboration with Tiktok for Europe. The Chinese platform will use the numbers verification API to simplify the user registration, eliminating the SMS passage. But the really interesting thing is the joint creation of a new API called “AGE VERIFICATION“, which will arrive first to Brazil and then expand to other markets. Reading between the lines is clear: Telefónica has found a way to monetize its privileged position as identity validityan increasingly valuable asset in the digital ecosystem. The agreement with Cabify follows the same logic: provide identity verification to expedite records. In the demo there has been a saving of ten seconds: a message no longer comes, everything happens “inside”, automatically and invisible to the user. What was previously a simple SMS is now reconvigned in a premium service that companies will be willing to pay. Cabify is an example. Carlos Herrera, Cto de Cabify, along with Chema Alonso in the demo of the API. Image: Xataka. Telefónica is transforming what was previously an operational cost into a source of income. A good play … in the absence of seeing the real business volume it generates. Then there is the protocol with the Community of Madrid. What the administration wants with Open Gateway is to “optimize internal processes.” In Health, Transportation, Justice and Tourism. Movistar is positioned as well as Technological intermediary between citizens and public services. This is a space traditionally played by great technological ones, so Telefónica has found here a space to achieve one of its great desires: to be seen as another technological and not only as a telecommunications provider. The agreements with two heavyweights, AWS and Google Cloud close the circle: With Amazon, Telefónica will create an innovation center to develop SAAS products aimed at operators. With Google you will integrate Open Gateway in Firebase to offer authentication to more than 3 million developers. Christiaan Brand, from Firebase, along with Chema Alonso during the presentation. Image: Xataka. It is striking that other operators such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile and Telenor are also adding to this last initiative, indicating a coordinated effort of the sector to recover relevance against technological platforms. They have good reasons to form a common front. The question that floats in the Barcelona air is If these APIs will be enough to rebalance the balance of power. For years, telecos have seen how technology built multimillionaire empires on their networks while they were relegated to connectivity suppliers Comoditized. Open Gateway is its commitment to capture part of the value that passes through its networks. The challenge is to execute this vision in a usually slow sector when innovating. And above all, when displaying. APIS standardization through Camara Project (developed by GSMA and Linux Foundation) is a step in the right direction, but operators will have to demonstrate that they can move at the speed required by the industry. No one knows if this strategy will translate into the long -awaited year for relevance in the digital ecosystem, but we do know that Telefónica is clearer than ever its position: It does not want to be the highway, but also who controls a part of the traffic. Its large appliances will reach the global market in 2025

Xiaomi has evolved a lot in the last decade. What began as a smartphones brand today is an ecosystem that covers From vacuum robots to washing machines. However, a good part of their products still does not leave the Asian market, which greatly limits its growth in other regions and leaves many users without access to its most advanced technology. But this is about to change. At least, that’s what has advanced William Lu at the Mobile World Congress. The president of Xiaomi has confirmed at the Technological Fair that is held these days in Barcelona that the company will expand its commitment to the connected home. As part of this strategy, in 2025 they plan to bring their large appliances to the global market. The expansion of the Xiaomi ecosystem continues The announcement has not come with too many details, but there are clues that help us understand what products will cross the borders of China. Three key categories could be seen on the auditorium screens: refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. It is not clear what exact models will be available, but everything indicates that these will be the protagonists of this year’s expansion. At the end of last year, for example, the company presented one of its most advanced washing machines to date. Its great attraction was the ability to wash clothes with a minimum water consumption, in addition to incorporating multiple intelligent functions. However, however promising it seems, its availability was limited exclusively to the Chinese market, leaving out European users. It should be noted that, although Xiaomi has announced an expansion that aims to occur as soon as this year, it is not yet clear which countries will be part of this deployment. So there is the doubt of whether their large appliances will reach markets like Spanish or if availability will remain limited to certain regions. We will have to wait to learn more information. What is clear is that Xiaomi has gradually expanded its catalog beyond China, With an avalanche of new products They have reached different markets. This expansion strategy has paid off: at the end of last year, the company already had 861 million devices connected worldwide. Everything indicates that his commitment to strengthen his international presence is very serious. Images | Xiaomi In Xataka | The Xiaomi Su7 Ultra has registered 7,000 reservations in 10 minutes. You have to put very large quotes on the "reasoning" of the AI: Welcome to the "irregular intelligence"

The second definition of reasoning according to The Spanish Language Dictionary is to “order and relate ideas to reach a conclusion.” That is just what do models of AI such as O3-mini, Openai or Deepseek R1. They collect information, order it and build an answer in which they reach a conclusion. Are these models models that “Reason” really? It is an inevitable question with a difficult answer. From that term began to be used, in Xataka We often came to quote itbecause comparing the theoretician “reasoning” of these machines with human reasoning is delicate. And it’s how they indicate In Voxscientists are still trying to understand how reasoning in the human brain works. There are in fact various types of reasoning such as the deductive (from a premise we reach a conclusion) or the inductive (we perform a wide generalization from a series of observations). {“Videid”: “X95L504”, “Autoplay”: False, “Title”: “Counting with OpenAi O1”, “Tag”: “OpenAi”, “Duration”: “88”} Divide a problem into parts to solve it It is also reasoning about him. It is in fact the idea after which is the so-called “chain of thought” (“Chain-of-Thought”) of which OpenAI I already talked in September 2024when o1 was launched. It is a process that mimics to some extent to human reasoning in such problems, but is the machine reason as people do? For some experts one of the things that distinguish us (for the moment) of the machines in this type of tasks is that we can discover “a rule or pattern from limited data or experience and to apply this rule or pattern to new and unknown situations “ This was stated by Melanie Mitchell – of the Santa Fe Institute – and his colleagues In a study about the “reasoning” capabilities of AI models in November 2023. At that time there was still almost a year for O1 and other rival “reasoning” models, but the data remains valid, because the models of AI follow needing to be training with vast amounts of information. In Xataka O3 Rate as high as human programmers in a reasoning and abstraction. It is just what OpenAi needs But Mitchell analyzed The spectacular O3 performance in ARC tests a year later, and was surprised at how well he had behaved. He also caught the large amount of computer resources that required that “reasoning” capacity, and wondered if the machines were really using the type of abstraction that were really needed for those tests. There are studies that precisely question that AI is “reasoning.” October 1, 2024 signed by four researchers from the Institute of Technology of Israel and the Northeastern University wondered if the LLMS (Large Language Models, great language models) Solve these reasoning tasks learning robust and generalizable algorithms, or do so memorizing the data with which they have been trained. Do they use heuristics and experience, or “think”? The conclusion reached after their evidence is that there is apparently a mixture of both: they implement a set of heuristics – a combination of memorized rules – to carry out their arithmetic “reasoning”. They do not “reason”, or at least they don’t do it as human beings do. Above all, experts criticize, they apply heuristics and a series of memorized data to solve the problem. Their ability to extrapolar them and adapt to new problems is limited. They are applied students, but they are not “great.” The ARC-AGI test tries to raise evidence that for human beings are relatively simple, but with which the models of AI have a really bad time. For other experts, such as Shannon Vallor, from the University of Edinburgh, what AI does is once again, imitate human behavior. They do traditional chatbots such as Chatgpt when generating text, and also do these “reasoning” models by imitating RL human reasoning process, decomposing the problem and trying to solve it by stages. Some researchers They speak Of an irregular intelligence, because as Andrej Karpathy explained – Exoes ARC tests that for human beings are very simple. Until they stop getting stuck, of course. That is what all the companies of AI pursue with increasingly advanced and versatile models. Less irregular. And when they arrive (if they arrive) they may not have too much importance if they “reason” or not. And either Let’s quote That word. Image | Todd Martin In Xataka | Copilot, Chatgpt and GPT-4 have changed the world of programming forever. NASA ends up announcing that this large asteroid has a 1% chance of impacting with the earth. That is not normal

At the end of March last year, NASA launched a very special statement. The agency came to say that the biggest object that will happen near the earth will be An asteroid that will approximate 32,000 kilometers And it can be seen with the naked eye on April 13, 2029. A few hours ago, NASA has given another “those” news. They have found a meteorite distinct To all we know. YR4: Impact risk. As we said, NASA has issued a statement About an asteroid called as 2024 YR4 Discovered at the end of December 2024 by the Atlas system in Chile. This object has drawn attention because it presents a probability of impact superior to all recent meteorites: 1% for December 22, 2032which makes it one of the asteroids with the greatest potential risk of collision registered to date. With everything and as we usually say in these cases, this estimate will possibly change as new observations are made, with expectations that the probability of impact decreases. Classification and risk. The asteroid has an estimated size of between 40 and 91 meters in diameter, similar to that of the object that caused the Tunguska event in 1908. Therefore, currently It is classified at level 3 of the Torino scaleindicating a real probability of impact that merits monitoring, although, again, its level is expected to be reduced as more data will be obtained. This scale, used to evaluate the risk of asteroid impact, goes from 0 (without danger) to 10 (catastrophic collision). In any case and for us to get an idea, before this finding there was no recorded asteroid with a score greater than 0 on the Torino scale. Closeness and probabilities of impact. The closest step of 2024 YR4 is estimated at 0.00001 Astronomical Units (AU) of the Earth, which is equivalent to 1,500 kilometers away, that is, closer than many satellites in terrestrial orbit. At the moment, The impact probability is 1 in 83 (Approximately 1.2%), which has generated that concern in the scientific community. However, and although we look repetitive, it is important to underline that the experience with similar asteroids indicates that these probabilities usually decrease after more analysis. Precedents There have been cases of asteroids that have reached higher levels on the Torino scale and were subsequently discarded as threats. An example is 99942 apophis, which in 2004 reached level 4 due to a probability of 1.6% impact in 2029, Although subsequent studies eliminated any risk In 2029, 2036 and 2068. Therefore, it is feasible to think that asteroid 2024 YR4 in the future is reclassified at level 0 As their orbital calculations are related. Possible consequences and monitoring. To put ourselves in the worst of the stage, with a possible impact, 2024 YR4 would not represent a global extinction event, but could cause significant damage if impacting a populated area, similar to the famous Tunguska event that swept a vast region in Siberia. Therefore, NASA and other space agencies will continue to track their trajectory and refine the calculations to confirm their destination. Although The American agency has emphasized its statement that the probability of impact is still low (about 1%) and that this type of initial evaluations tend to be corrected over time, also ends up underlining that it will adjust its predictions ensuring that any potential risk is properly evaluated and, if necessary, addressed With planetary defense strategies. China has turned on a wind turbine so large that among its blades the tallest building in Spain fits. And there are 11 meters left

Best known by Your high speed trains Able to reach 450 km/h, the Chinese state company CRRC Corporation He just hit the table in a very different industry: that of marine wind turbines. A new scale for offshore wind. CRRC has launched the larger floating wind turbine in the world. Known as Qihang, it has a tower of 151 meters high and a rotor 260 meters in diameter, 11 more than the crystal tower, the tallest building in Spain. Qihang opens a new scale for marine wind energy in which only China competes against China. With 20 MW capacity, it exceeds 16.6 floating wind turbines and 18 MW that Envision Energy and Dongfang Electric deployed, respectively, in 2024. However, it will soon be surpassed by Mingyang Wind Power’s new 22 MW model. Touring like a high -speed train. With a maximum rotation speed similar to that of CRRC trains, the Qihang wind turbine can produce up to 62 GWh of energy per year, enough to supply electricity to 37,000 homes per turbine. Its design is a work of art of modular architecture. It allows multiple power settings, and adapts to different floating platforms and anchors. With materials capable of supporting extreme conditions, including typhoons, it has more than 200 sensors in blades, structures, transmission systems, floats and moorings for comprehensive monitoring. First unit in tests. The first Qihang He left the CRRC factory In Sheyang (Jiangsu province) on October 10. He arrived in Dongying (Shandong province) in December and was transferred to the test site in the port of Guangli using self -propelled modular barges. On January 11, already completely assembled, it began to operate in what will be a period of exhaustive tests and certifications before its definitive to the high seas and its connection to the electricity grid. The country that surpassed Europe at sea. With unstoppable development, China already exceeded the United Kingdom as the country with the highest installation of marine wind energy in the world, and this type of huge floating turbines only reinforce its global leadership. Only Chinese companies are developing turbines with powers greater than 20 MW for the logistics difficulties they entail In regions like Europe. Floating technology can expand the generation of wind energy to deeper and more distant waters from the coast, accelerating the decarbonization of the electric grid without impacting the landscape of the coast. Announces a data center almost as large as Manhattan and up to 65,000 million investment

We are witnessing how the race is accelerated for the development of the artificial intelligence (AI). After Stargate ad, An initiative of 500,000 million dollars that promises to greatly benefit OpenAIthe target movement arrives. The social networks giant plans to invest up to 65,000 million dollars this year to consolidate its role in this strategic area. Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s CEO, has said In a publication in Threads that part of this money will be used in the construction of a data center of more than 2 gigawatts. According to their size, data centers to hyperscala may need from megawatts to gigawatts of power. In this case, we are facing an installation that “could cover a significant part of Manhattan.” A huge effort … and staggered As expected, not the entire planned cluster will start operating at the same time. Goal expects to put online around 1.3 million GPU Specialized for the end of the year, which will require 1 power gigavatio. The works will continue to reach the power stop in the following months with the objective of promoting the main long -term target products and businesses. But the Menlo Park company also has some more immediate purposes: it wants it to call 4, A model of AI that is expected to arrive this yearbecome a latest generation leader. We can interpret this as an online missile for Openai and its most advanced models, such as GPT-4O. Goal also wants to develop an AI Engineer system. An overlap of the Metca Data Center on Manhattan The Meta calls have pleasantly surprised the industry. In addition, they give life to the generative functions used by millions of users of Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp through Goal AI. For a while, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud cloud infrastructure have been one of the most outstanding market. Firefighters struggle to control large fire north of Los Angeles

CASTAIC, California, USA — Firefighters were trying to stay ahead of a huge, fast-moving wildfire that swept through rugged mountains north of Los Angeles and left more than 50,000 people under evacuation orders or warnings. The Hughes Fire began late Wednesday morning and in less than a day had burned nearly 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) of trees and brush near Castaic Lake, a popular recreational area about 40 miles (64 kilometers) away. of the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires that have been burning for three weeks. Although the region was under a red flag warning for critical fire risk, winds were not as strong as when those fires started, allowing firefighting aircraft to drop tens of thousands of gallons of fire retardant on the new fire. By Wednesday night, approximately 14% of the Hughes Fire had been contained. “The situation we are in today is very different from the situation we were in 16 days ago,” Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said Wednesday night. (John Locher/Associated Press) (Café de Leche / Matthew Schodorf) Red flag warnings were extended until 10 a.m. Friday in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Officials remained concerned that the Palisades and Eaton fires could break their containment lines as firefighters continue to monitor hot spots. More than 31,000 people have been ordered to evacuate from the Hughes Fire, and another 23,000 are under evacuation warnings, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. No houses or other structures burned were reported. Parts of Interstate 5 near the Hughes Fire that had been closed reopened Wednesday night. County police officers return to their vehicle after observing flames caused by the Hughes Fire along a road in Castaic, Calif.ornia, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. (Ethan Swope/AP) A 48-kilometer (30-mile) stretch of the main north-south artery had been reserved for emergency vehicles, to move equipment and to prevent accidents due to smoke crossing the highway. Crews on the ground and in water-dropping aircraft attempted to prevent the wind-driven fire from crossing the interstate and heading toward Castaic. Marrone said since the winds were not as strong as they were two weeks ago, aerial crews were able to drop fire retardant on the south side of the fire, where the flames were moving. More than 4,000 firefighters were assigned to the fire, he said. Winds in the area were blowing at 67 kilometers per hour (42 miles per hour) in the afternoon. They had reached 65 mph (105 km/h) in some mountain spots by Wednesday night, according to David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Kayla Amara drove to the Stonegate neighborhood in Castaic to pick up items from the house of a friend who had run out to pick up her daughter from preschool. While Amara was packing up the car, she learned that the fire had dramatically increased in size and decided to spray the property with a hose. “Other people are also spraying their houses with hoses. I hope there is a house to return to,” Amara said as police cars raced through the streets and flames engulfed trees on a hill in the distance. Amara, a nurse who lives in nearby Valencia, said she has been on edge for weeks as massive fires devastated Southern California. “It’s been stressful with those other fires, but now that this one is close to home it’s just super stressful,” he said. To the south, Los Angeles officials began preparing for possible rain as some residents were allowed to return to the charred areas of Pacific Palisades and Altadena. The windy weather was expected to last through Thursday and rain could begin as early as Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. “Rain is forecast and the threat of mud and debris flows in our fire-affected communities is real,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said during a news conference Wednesday morning. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass warned that winds could carry ash and advised Angelenos to visit the city’s website to learn how to protect themselves from toxic air during the latest Santa Ana wind event. Health Director Los Angeles County Public Prosecutor Barbara Ferrer warned that the ash could contain heavy metals, arsenic and other harmful materials. “Even brief exposure can potentially cause skin irritation and lead to more serious problems,” Ferrer said Wednesday, asking people to wear protective gear while cleaning. Low humidity, bone-dry vegetation and high winds came as firefighters continued to battle the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures since they began Jan. 7. The fence on the Palisades fire reached 70%, and the Eaton fire was at 95%. Luna said Wednesday that his department was still investigating 22 missing person reports from both fire zones. All of the people reported missing are adults, he said. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the causes of the fires but has not released any findings. Several lawsuits have been filed by people who lost their homes in the Eaton Fire, alleging that Southern California Edison equipment caused the fire. On Tuesday, a judge overseeing one of the lawsuits ordered the utility to produce data from circuits in the area where the fire started.
