NVIDIA was going to make the mother of all investments in OpenAI, but the era of favors between friends is over

NVIDIA has emerged as the pillar of artificial intelligence. Your chips They are the ones who move the more powerful data centers of the world and is getting billion-dollar investments to keep the wheel turning. At the same time, it has become one of the largest strategic investors of the artificial intelligence ecosystem. OpenAI She seemed to be his best friend, but that’s over. AND Jensen HuangCEO of NVIDIA, makes it clear: the next investments will probably be the last. Also in its great rival. Of 100,000 million. That was the magic figure of which we talked a few months ago. Recreating the schemes of “vendor financing“of the dotcom bubble, NVIDIA was going to finance OpenAI with $100 billion. In exchange, OpenAI would buy NVIDIA chips for the same value. It was a “trap” operation because the company would become the financier of its own premium client. With such an investment, it was expected that OpenAI will build data centers that they would need between four and five million NVIDIA GPUs: Huang already commented at the time that this represented double the total GPUs they distributed the previous year. In short: an absolute animal. And those 100,000 million were a mega-operation, yes, but one more of the many rounds of financing that the company led by Sam Altman. To 30,000 million. But in early February of this year, something unexpected happened. In what seemed like a historic turnaroundJensen Huang, cornered by the media after a Casual dinner at a Taiwanese restaurantcommented that there was never a 100% commitment to make that mammoth investment. The CEO of NVIDIA pointed out that they would surely continue making “the largest investment” they have made in their history, but although he did not give a figure, it was clear that nothing more than 100,000 million. How much? Lessmuch less: 30,000 million dollars. Good luck, OpenAI. Love broke, a love that began when Jensen Huang gave a DGX-1 server to Elon Musk back in 2016. Because it is not only that Jensen has commented that the figure will be around 30,000 million, but because he has mentioned that “it could be the last time” that they inject money into OpenAI. And the reason is very clear: “the reason is because they are going public.” From there, OpenAI will have to change its model completely and will be under the designs of the market. Big bets. NVIDIA, with this operation, shows that it is taking another course, one in which it prefers not to marry anyone and not commit in a truly serious way to a single company. Of course, OpenAI is not the only big operation that NVIDIA is going to get into. Another $10 billion is in store for Anthropic, OpenAI’s great rival both professionally and personally (since Altman and Amodei they can’t stand each other). Worse Huang has also mentioned which, again, will probably also be the last. They are also expected to go public. Fewer giants, broader base. OpenAI will have 110 billion soon. Apart from NVIDIA’s 30,000, Amazon will inject 50,000 million and SoftBank has committed 30,000 million. Huang has hinted that these two large operations could mark the beginning of a change of course. Instead of operations that can be counted on the fingers of one hand in giants, more investment in smaller companies. NVIDIA has gone investing more modest sums at other AI companies over the years. Model and software companies, infrastructure, robotics and even autonomous driving. It has been converting its GPUs and platforms into the standard on which it is founded the entire artificial intelligence industryand perhaps this break with giant companies like OpenAI or Anthropic marks a new beginning in which the focus is on supporting a broader ecosystem of partners. In this way, you will be able to continue shaping your objective: a range of more or less large companies that scale on your platform. Now OpenAI lets you share your friends’ phones with ChatGPT. The question is why would anyone want to do that?

ChatGPT is changing in leaps and bounds: we already know that announcements will arrive sooner rather than later and how will they work and in recent days OpenAI has sent its users an email like the one you see above informing about an update to your privacy policy. The first aspect that changes: the appearance of the mythical “Find friends in OpenAI services” in a step to become a more social platform synchronizing contacts. The message in question: “You can now choose to sync your contacts to see who else is using our services. This is completely optional.” Finding friends in OpenAI apps. The OpenAI privacy policy page allows you to consult the current version and the previous onewhere we see that there is a section that was not there before: in addition to account information, user content, communication information and other information you provide, another one appears: “Contact Data” is new. What it literally says: “If you choose to connect your device contacts, we upload information from your device’s address books and check which of your contacts also use our Services. If any of your contacts are not already using our Services, we will inform you if they sign up for our Services later.” What does it mean. That is, OpenAI wants to access and store the information from your phone’s phonebook to divide your contacts’ phone numbers into two: those who already have an account and those who don’t. The idea is to find contacts that you know who use tools like Sora or the group chats through suggestions. But also take note of those who don’t use their services as they let you know if they sign up later. The option is not yet operational and OpenAI has not yet explained how it will be implemented in the app. What we do know is that it is optional (that is, you can refuse) and that what the company led by Sam Altman will save are the phone numbers in your device’s address book. Neither the names nor the details of the entire notebook. How it will work. OpenAI has detailed that the phones are hashed to later compare them with existing OpenAI accounts, from which the suggestions appear. The next question is: how long do you store them? OpenAI itself has that question in its help sheet, but the answer is not clear at all. After this process of searching for matches between your agenda and its database, contact lists are half deletedbecause it also ensures that “encrypted phones could be kept on OpenAI servers to facilitate connection functions.” Everything indicates that OpenAI will periodically check if anyone of your contacts has noticed. In any case, we still don’t know the answer. Of course, you will have the option to revoke the permissions. Why do you want to know that haha salu2. The company has not offered images of what the experience will be like or what functionalities it will unlock for those who agree to share this information. So why would you want to accept this option? For now, to see suggestions from users in your calendar, like Manolo the plumber or your cousin Pili from Utebo, with whom you may not talk too much about your projects in group chats or your experiments in Sora. If you decide to connect with that person, that person may receive a notification to follow you. He follow back of a lifetime, come on. The small print. With what we know and taking into account the use we make of OpenAI services, perhaps the option of becoming friends with the plumber via Sora is not essential. However, even if you do not agree to participate, anyone who has your number and agrees to synchronize their contacts will be giving your number to OpenAI. Even if you don’t have an account. It’s all advantages (for OpenAI). Finding advantages for users of this optional feature costs, just the opposite of seeing the benefits of OpenAI. To start, weave a network that invites you to use OpenAI tools because your environment uses it (I stay because everyone uses it). Likewise, by seeing who is not on the platform, OpenAI can also incentivize you to invite them to encourage their organic growth at a critical time where competition is fierce. Connecting contacts also has a potentially interesting side: that OpenAI develops more collaborative tools that invite you to use and spend more time in the app. Finally, with this function the company behind ChatGPT can establish a social graph on interests, educational levels and professional environments, cinnamon sticks to improve personalization or simply to help them validate identity and security in the case of minors. The first law that regulates ‘AI friends’ is here

The debate about the effects of AI on mental health is beginning to transform into tangible measures. OpenAI announced on ChatGPT parental controls after the lawsuit for the suicide of a teenager and now we have the first law that regulates the so-called friends or AI companions popularized by apps like Replika either Character.AI. What has happened? California Governor Gavin Newsom has just signed the first law to control AI companions, as reported in TechCrunch. “We can continue to lead the field of artificial intelligence and technology, but we must do so responsibly, protecting our children every step of the way. The safety of our children is not for sale,” the governor said in a statement. Why is it important. There is other proposals on the table in the United States, but California is the first state to make the issue of AI companions a law. The risks of using these types of chatbots, especially among teenagers, are no longer expert warningsnow there will be legal consequences. Companies that do not comply with the rules could face fines of up to $250,000. What is an AI companion. They are chatbots that seek to replicate a human connection and can offer everything from emotional support to intimate relationships. By design, they are the most sensitive form of AI in terms of potential mental health effects. The most popular apps are Replika and Character.AI, but also There are those who establish these types of connections with “normal” AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude. There are even companies that They “resurrect” a loved one with the use of AI to help cope with grief (although experts believe it is achieve just the opposite). What the law says. It will come into force on January 1, 2026 and is designed especially to protect younger users. Between the measures included There is an obligation for companies to integrate age verification systems. In addition, they must display warnings that make it clear to users that the interactions are generated by AI, as well as integrate suicide or self-harm detection protocols. Other measures. As we said at the beginning, the lawsuit from the parents of the teenager who discussed his suicide plans with ChatGPT sparked a crisis at OpenAI, which soon announced new safeguards for ChatGPT such as parental controls. AI companion apps are also bringing this topic into their discourse. Character AI already has parenting tools and Replika assured TechCrunch that they dedicate a lot of resources to filtering content and directing users in complicated situations to help lines. We no longer use them to connect with friends

Social networks have marked the last 20 years of the Internet. His matrices companies, which seemed that they were going to be forgotten, continue Among the most attractive companies. However, it is only necessary to go around their websites or applications to see that, in general, they are still networks, but socially have little, in the sense of continuous and direct relationship with friends, acquaintances or people we choose to follow. The great social networks today. Goal, who faces to be chopped in the Open judgment against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), affirms That currently, only 7% of the time we spend on Instagram, and 17% on Facebook, we spend it consuming friends. And falling. The reality? “Most of the time in both applications is dedicated to watching videos, more and more short format, which are” disconnected “, that is, they do not come from a friend or a followed account,” they tell in the finish line. What remains is the magical word: algorithm, which Meta affirms that they developed to compete with the rise of Tiktok, which was braking their growth. Interested part. The FTC accuses monopoly goal, and Meta affirms, based on these data, that there is no monopoly because there is no “personal social media service market.” If social networks are increasingly used to consume content of friends, we are not facing a personal social network, but before something else. Or that argue from the legal department of the giant. What Zuckerberg announced in 2019. That social networks in general, and those of the goal in particular, have become platforms in which we expose and consume less own content and more of influencers and large profiles, has to do with the strategy that Zuckerberg announced before the change of name. Six years ago, the CEO announced that “The future is private“, a shocking phrase after his privacy scandals. Without announcing that they were going to focus on the users stopped publishing or consuming what their friends saw, they did affirm that the future of their platforms went through closest communications with friends, more ephemeral and privately, in front of what the Tuenti boards, Facebook walls or even Instagram comments. In that sense, on these platforms, an activity that has grown a lot is to send reels or stories to our friends by direct message: they are sent 700,000 reels by private every minute. Tiktok’s impact still feels. When goal began to turn the most public and perennial content to the stories, the threat was Snapchat. But then, Tiktok arrived, and its impact was huge. Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, affirmed at the trial that the Chinese social network is “the fiercest competition we have faced.” His emergence in the market, he argued, “generated a 23% decrease in the time that users dedicated to Instagram.” The thing not only ended the Reels launch or its equivalent on Facebook, but with a copy of who already dominated algorithmic consumption: YouTube. Social networks have lived their youtubization. But YouTube also lives it. To compete with Tiktok and the Reels launched the Shorts. The algorithm still is not as advanced as the Chinese, but It is growing 186% compared to the previous yearaccording to the company. TO THE COFUNDADOR DE YOUTUBE He doesn’t like the new model too much. Social networks in 2025. With the arrival of The locks and the green circles (Google+ saw it first), The photos of family, exit and stay with friends are still where they never left since WhatsApp is WhatsApp: in the groups or in private conversations. They were published by times in Tuenti, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat, but they were always in private chats. What did not exist so much at the beginning of the web 2.0 Internet were niche interest groups as what had been experienced since the 90s in the forums. In many cases, these were emptied to move to groups on social networks. There are those who returned to them, but the great successor of all that is Telegram channels and groups, Discord, Reddit, etc The inconvenience of the first two is that the conversation does not leave there, it does not index or there is a way to access that knowledge if they are not part of them. Reddit’s problem, which is more open, is that we leave all our knowledge in the hands of a single actor. We needed a different social network, which did not arrive. The future is not very promising. According to the Empty Internet Theory either ‘Dead Internet Theory‘, Much of the content that exists in the network is created by automated bots and algorithms. In X we have come to see cases from this. For example, one in which a comic video was published for its sound but silenced, and yet it went viral and laughed at him (along with the criticisms of many users, who did not understand the joke). They are also being filled with stolen content. The problem is no longer loose examples, but the flooding of platforms such as YouTube of mass content created by AI, now that Google itself has Integrated I see 3 in the shorts. The impact is such that YouTube is trying to demonet itbut it is not getting preventing that become In a warehouse of ‘Slop‘. Manu Rey is the clown of his group of friends: with a natural ability to make his colleagues laugh, but with no projection outside his intimate circle. Enough to become an influencer overnight? His naturalness were undoubted They reveal what they have been doing. The importance of naturalness. The case of Manu Rey demonstrates some things about fame on the Internet. First, that the public appreciates above other characteristics the naturalness and “real being” in front of the camerawhich undoubtedly enters into contradiction with the Behavior of many celebrities. Spontaneity generates a feeling of authenticity that emotionally connects with the audience, especially with the youngest spectators. Collaborative fame. The idea of a person who becomes famous for the collaborative thrust of a group is something absolutely new and typical of the Internet era. Virality is not always a product of a single person: It can arise thanks to the active participation of communities that share, comment and recreate content. The Fans communities, Memes and digital subcultures drive these collaborative trends. @Manu__rey__ Day 19 uploading Manu videos until it finds out 😂 this can be Manu’s last video without being known and it is good that you can see how random it is and what it can do any day because if 😂 he does not know that he exists, but he deserves that you follow him because he is that person who deserves 100% that you do famous 🥹 ♬ Original sound – Manu Rey The fame of all. The fact that social platforms have a network structure (and hence their name), makes the content value increase according to more people share and reinvent it, that is, as collaborate in their creation. This turns fame into a distributed and collaborative phenomenon: those almost 100,000 followers are not only from Manu (which may be unable to maintain the Hype generated now that it has begun to create its own pieces), but A group responsibility. As wine it left. Sudden and not sought on the Internet is a phenomenon even prior to social networks, but has multiplied since, very simple, we can forward videos to thousands of contacts. In many cases, the collaborative activity we are talking about is essential, and so it happened with Multiple protagonists of completely accidental memes (David the child drugged in the dentist to Zöe Roth, the Machiavellian girl of the fire). Tell me what bacteria live in your intestine and I will tell you who your friends are | Health and well-being

Mencius, a Chinese philosopher, wrote a handful of centuries ago that “friendship is one mind in two bodies.” Modern science could add another element: friendship is also a microbiota in two bodies. A study has found that the more people interact, the more similar the composition of the microorganisms living in their intestines becomes, even if they do not live in the same household. The investigation, recently published in the magazine Naturealso ensures that an individual’s microbiome is determined not only by their closest social contacts, but also by the connections of these contacts. That is, the friends of your friends. To know the details of this investigation you have to take a trip to the western heart of the Honduran jungle. It was in this Caribbean country where scientists from Yale University worked for ten years until they recruited a group of 1,787 adults, spread across 18 isolated villages, to donate a sample of their feces. All participants had a traditional diet and practically did not consume antibiotics or other medications. Nicholas Christakis, lead author of the study, explains that they were “very lucky that the participants were helpful and engaged.” The scientists needed to be able to trace each of the volunteers’ contacts with certainty, something that would have been much more complicated to do in cities like Madrid or Barcelona. The towns of Honduras, in this case, were perfect. More information Before continuing to advance with the results of this research, it is worth explaining what the microbiota is and why it is important. Francisco Guarner, director of the Digestive System Research Unit at the Vall d’Hebron General Hospital in Barcelona, has a definition: “It is the bacteria communityviruses and fungi that colonize the digestive tract. We could think of it as another organ of the human body, a set of biological capacities that help the survival of an individual.” Although this organ It lives within us, it functions under its own rules and hierarchies. It is organized in its own way and it is not easy to manipulate it. “It is essential for the digestion of food. It provides us with many enzymes and metabolic pathways that humans do not have,” adds the expert. Thanks to the microbiota we can, for example, digest fiber. They are also essential for the development of a balanced immune system. For decades, science has explored the composition of the microbiota to understand how it is generated in each person. Mireia Vallés Colomer, director of the Microbiome Research Group at Pompeu Fabra University, details that vertical transmission had been, until now, the most likely explanation. “We receive these microorganisms, in large part, from our mothers, through childbirth and breastfeeding. We also share bacteria that our grandmother passed to our mother,” he details. However, the new study ventures that the microbiota changes throughout life, and that those largely responsible for these changes are our social contacts. A horizontal transmission. “We were very surprised by the reach of microbes that networks of people share. In fact, we can predict who your friends are based on how similar the microbes in your stool are to theirs,” says Christakis. Data suggests that people living in the same house share up to 14% of the microbial strains in their intestines. While those who do not live together, but usually spend time together, share 10%. The research has also been able to determine that individuals who live in the same town, but who do not usually interact too frequently, share only 4%. There is, the authors say, a chain of transmission because friends of friends share more strains than would be expected by mere chance. The transmission method There is a question that continues to swirl around this research and that is to understand how strains are transmitted bacteria from one microbiota to the other. “We do not have a conclusive answer about how this transmission occurs,” says Vallés. And he adds: “What is hypothesized is that what reaches the intestine has to pass through the mouth. “Many bacteria in the microbiome don’t tolerate direct contact with oxygen for very long, so close contact is needed, but we don’t know exactly what that looks like.” Guarner, however, details that “the fecal-oral route “It seems to be the most important transmission vector.” That is to say, although we clean ourselves and more or less control our hygiene, in some previous studies it has been detected that the bacteria that are typically found in the intestine also appear on the hands. This is how they then reach the mouth. Some of the bacteria manage to survive this journey from the intestine because they travel in the form of spores, similar to those of fungi. “With this transmission mechanism it does not have to be extremely direct contact, it can be through a towel or clothing,” details Guarner. There is no need to be alarmed. This transfer of microorganisms It is what, in some way, keeps us alive. So much so, that new lines of research on the relationship between microbiota and health suggest that a healthy and fit community of microorganisms has an impact on several aspects of our well-being. Some researchers are trying to establish a direct relationship between the microbiota and non-communicable diseasessuch as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and even depression. Guarner explains: “This is still a bit speculative, but normally what happens is that these types of diseases are associated with a poor microbiome.” Vallés contributes that “it has been observed that people with the so-called ‘modern diseases’ suffer an alteration in the composition of their microbiome.” But it is not that there is a particular bacteria responsible for these diseases, but rather it is the loss of diversity in general that worsens the state of health. In this case, the research opens the door to continue analyzing whether these non-communicable diseases, in fact, do have a transmissibility factor. And if an entire community of people has a weakened microbiota, these diseases could proliferate more easily … Read more
