“93% of all foldables that have been sold in Spain are Samsung”

The foldable phone market is no longer at the point where Samsung had to explain why a folded screen might make sense. That phase is far away. Since that first Galaxy Fold of 2019 to the most recent generations, the category has gone from raising very basic doubts to occupying its own space within the high range. The question, now, is another: what to do with a family that has gained ground, that already has competitors looking at the same terrain and that hints that its next step may not be limited to repeating the known format. That’s where your own conversation comes in. David Alonso. The director of Mobile Experience at Samsung Electronics Iberia spoke with Xataka in Madrid after a meeting focused on the history of the brand’s folding devices. Its reading is relevant because the South Korean company is not speaking from outside the category, but from a position that it claims is dominant in the country. Samsung no longer has to prove that foldables exist, now it has to defend why they are still its territory The figure that the firm puts on the table helps to understand where it is speaking from. As Alonso defended during the meeting, with data provided by the company at the end of the first quarter of 2026, “93% of all foldables that have been sold in Spain are Samsung“It is a very high figure, but it should also be read with caution: it does not in itself describe the future of the category, but rather the starting point from which the company interprets this new phase. Having arrived earlier and, among other things, having built a recognizable family gives it an advantage. Samsung has begun to leave clues on networks about the next move of its folding family Samsung’s argument is based on a simple idea: trust was not given, it had to be built. It’s a reasonable way to count the journey. We are talking about an expensive category, with a folding screen as a differentiating element and with an initial history marked by very specific doubts. Alonso formulated it as a learning experience accumulated over seven generations. “Since then there have been seven generations, seven generations of folding, because the family has been increasing. And what have we learned during this time? Well, we have learned several things. First, that trust is earned, because in the end it is true that it was a category that has created doubts.” That tour also changed the way the foldable was presented. The first Fold clearly aimed at productivity, with a larger interior screen and a logic closer to the mobile that opens to work, read or do several tasks at the same time. Then came the Flip, that moved the axis towards another type of user: less focused on gaining screen space and more attracted to a compact, different format and more linked to social uses. This expansion of the family helps to understand why the brand is no longer talking about a single folding product, but rather about a category with different paths. There is also an economic reading behind this bet. The director of Mobile Experience at Samsung Electronics Iberia defended during the conversation that the segment of more than 1,500 euros is the one that is growing the most in the market and linked it to a greater demand from the premium user. In this vision, product quality, user experience and integrated artificial intelligence increasingly weigh in the purchasing decision. The arrival of other manufacturers changes the balance of that conversation. For Samsung, the fact that there are more competitors in folding products serves as proof that the category has a long way to go. So we could say that if more brands enter the same field, the manufacturer that arrived first no longer competes only against the user’s initial doubt, but against alternatives that try to appropriate part of the story. Alonso himself put it this way during the interview. “For us, the next milestone is to continue maintaining ourselves as a benchmark in the market. Because one thing has happened that is very important, which is that competition has arrived, which for us is very important, because when competition comes it means that there is opportunity and that we are doing something well, right? If not, we would be totally alone, which is not good.” That’s why the teasers published Now they have more weight than a simple campaign. What was seen on social networks points to an evolution of the Galaxy foldable experience and suggests that the next step may move in the field of format. All this, together with the fact that part of Samsung’s launches in recent years have been concentrated between July and August, invites us to look towards an upcoming presentation, but at the time of publishing this article there are no official announcements. Mobile phone sales are sinking. Apple thinks it knows how to save them: with foldables

Apple seems to be preparing one of the most striking release schedules in its recent history. There is talk of no less than five new models between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027, and among all of them, one is especially protagonist: the (long rumored) foldable iPhone. The curious thing is not that Apple is launching it at this point, but that it is quite optimistic about said model. More foldable than expected. According to indicate in Nikkei Asia Sources close to Apple’s plans, Apple has asked its suppliers to prepare to manufacture about 10 million foldable iPhones this year. This is a figure clearly higher than the 7-8 million that were estimated recently, and this “doubled” commitment to the format is certainly surprising. risky bet. Firstly, because folding devices have never managed to achieve massive success in the mobile phone market. They are a very striking niche, but one in which manufacturers have not achieved the success they probably expected. And second and most important, because there is no oven (from the mobile industry) for buns. The memory crisis It is having a brutal impact in many areas, and the smartphone market is no exception: is preparing for the worst year in its entire history, in fact. Muscle is muscle. The company has already reserved components for 80 million smartphones for the second half of 2026 alone, and its total production for the year will exceed 220 million units, according to that newspaper. It is a spectacular figure, especially considering that its competitors in China, with brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo or Vivo, have had to cut its production by at least 100 million units due to the shortage of memory and other components. But of course, Apple is a lot of Apple, and its negotiating power with suppliers is spectacular. Staggered releases. For months it has been rumored that Apple will follow a very special launch route. Theoretically, it has decided to postpone the launch of the standard iPhone until the first half of 2027 to focus all the autumn prominence on the premium models: iPhone 18 Pro (if it is finally called that), Pro Max and of course that first foldable iPhone. It has even asked its suppliers to reserve components already used in the iPhone 17 for the future iPhone 18: It is another way to protect yourself from the shortage that is strangling the rest of the industry. In spring 2027, two more models. And as we said, while this fall we will see how the super high-end iPhone catalog is renewed, in the first half of 2027 We will foreseeably see the standard iPhone 18 and, attention, a new iPhone Air. There are apparently plans to renew its more affordable models, although at the moment there are no details on how it will be done. Be that as it may, the 2026-2027 academic year seems like it will become one of the most ambitious for Apple just at a terrible time for the industry. The hinge is no longer a problem. The great challenge with folding devices has always been the hinge: the screen ended up showing signs of the fold in that central area of the screen when unfolded, and no manufacturer had solved the problem until now. That threatened the launch of the Apple device, but it seems that the company has managed to overcome this challengewhich would make your device one of the most striking in that niche. Prices, the great threat. a week ago Apple announced price increases of 20% on average throughout its catalog. It was a splash of cold water for consumers, and that highlighted that not even the Cupertino company could avoid the memory crisis. The question, of course, is how those new policies will affect future iPhone prices. Is this increase a preview of another that will arrive in the fall? Or has Apple preferred to give bad news now to maintain prices later? The unknown is there, and it can mark the purchasing decision of millions of consumers. Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, first impressions. Samsung’s most ambitious leap in foldables has fine print

Imagine carrying a cell phone in your pocket that can transform into a 10-inch tablet when you fully deploy it. That is the promise of Samsung Galaxy Z TriFoldan idea that was already on the table and that really makes sense as soon as you have it in front of you. Closed, it behaves like a bar format phone with a 6.5-inch screen, something familiar and relatively comfortable, but just start opening it to understand that the South Korean company wanted to go one step further. I think it’s not just about gaining inches, but about materializing a complex idea. After the initial impact, my first reading of the Galaxy Z TriFold is that of a device that surprises with its degree of maturity within a still young category. It is noticeable that Samsung has focused on the solidity of the whole, on how the pieces are assembled and on conveying a certain confidence when handling it, something that, as my colleague Javier Lacort commented in 2024, has not always been evident. Before moving forward, it is worth remembering that we are dealing with first impressions, they are clear sensations, open questions, but without a thorough approval in search of definitive conclusions. Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold technical sheet Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold dimensions and weight Folded: 159.2 x 75.0 x 12.9 mm Unfolded: 159.2 x 214.1 x 3.9 mm (screen with SIM tray) / 4.2 mm (center screen) / 4.0 mm (screen with side button) 309 grams indoor screen Dynamic AMOLED 2X 10 inches 2160×1584 269 ppi 1600 nits peak brightness 120Hz (adaptive) outdoor screen Dynamic AMOLED 2X 6.5 inches 2520 x 1080, 21:9 422 ppi 2600 nits peak brightness 120 Hz (adaptive) processor Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3nm) memory and storage 16 GB of memory with 1 TB of internal storage 16 GB of memory with 512 GB of internal storage Not compatible with microSD rear camera 12 MP Ultra Wide Angle, Dual Pixel AF, F2.2, 1.4 μm, 120° 200 MP wide angle, autofocus, OIS, F1.7, 85˚, 2x optical quality zoom 10 MP PDAF telephoto, OIS, F2.4, 1.0 μm, 36˚, 3x optical zoom, up to 30x digital zoom front camera 10 MP F2.2, 1.12 μm, 85˚ selfie (outdoor screen) 10 MP F2.2, 1.12 μm, 100˚ selfie (indoor screen) battery and charging 5,600 mAh QC2.0 and AFC connectivity 5G LTE Wi-Fi 7 Bluetooth 5.4 operating system Android 16 One UI 8 others IP48 resistance price From 3,594,000 won The promise of a 10-inch tablet, and the price you pay for it To fully understand what this Galaxy Z TriFold proposes, we must stop at its physical approach. We are not looking at a conventional folding device, but rather a device with three panels and two folds that only supports two real ways of use: closed, like a phone, or completely open, “like a 10-inch tablet.” Unlike the approach we have seen in the Huawei Matewhere it is possible to use the device partially deployed with two active panels, there is no middle ground here. When you use it unfolded and the interior screen becomes the center of the experience, the TriFold begins to justify its approach. We are talking about a 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 2160 x 1584 resolution, 120 Hz and a density of 269 ppi, figures that explain why it feels so visually solid indoors. My contact with the device has been in the Samsung offices, in the evening and with artificial light, and in that context the experience has been excellent, with vivid colors and constant fluidity. It is true that the maximum brightness of the interior panel is 1600 nits, compared to 2600 nits for the exterior screen, but I have not had the opportunity to test it outdoors. When you leave content consumption, the TriFold lets itself be loved in multitasking scenarios. The screen offers real margin to maintain multiple applications open at the same time without the experience feeling limited, something that marks a distance from smaller folding products. Everything is more comfortable and less compressed, and the whole thing conveys a sense of order that is appreciated. It also seems relevant to me that it allows executing Samsung DeX directly on the screen itself, without an external monitor, because it reinforces your productivity focus. Now, in the hand, the Galaxy Z TriFold makes it clear from the first moment that it is not a light or discreet device when closed. With its 309 grams and a thickness of 12.9 mm when folded, it feels powerful, even more than one would expect when reading the technical sheet. That said, it is also worth putting it in perspective, because in numbers it does not go to the most extreme part of what we have seen in first generation folding devices. Opened, the perception changes noticeably, the weight is better distributed and the whole is surprisingly manageable for a 10-inch screen. One of the elements that caught my attention during the test was the way in which the TriFold manages its own folding. It is not just a question of hinges, but of how the device conditions the user’s gesture to protect itself. The route is clearly defined and if you try to close it incorrectly, the phone responds with a vibration and a warning on the screen that tells you not to continue there, something that reinforces the feeling of being in front of a product designed to avoid errors. Although the interior screen is the TriFold’s great attraction, it is also its most delicate part. When unfolded, the two folds are there and are part of the experience, although not in an intrusive way. It is not something that is constantly obvious and, in many moments, you can forget about them, but when you change the angle or the light hits it in a certain way they appear. In my case, for years the folds have bothered me a lot in folding ones, but over time I have learned to … Read more
