Why your iPhone is going to go directly from iOS 18 to iOS 26, and why it makes all the way

Apple has just taught us the next software news that will arrive at the iPhone in September. The next version of iOS comes with a redesign to which Liquid Glass have baptized (And to which they have dedicated a good time from the presentation), but without a doubt the most striking change of this year is that the next version It will not be called iOS 19but iOS 26. We tell you the reason behind this decision and no, Apple has not been the first to do so.

Jump from iOS 18 to iOS 26 makes sense

Since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, Apple has increased the numbering of one by one: iOS, iOS 2, iOS 3, iOS 4 … until you reach the current iOS 18. One more year, one more version, it makes sense. So, Why jump eight numbers suddenly?

Apple wants to unify all its product ranges. All new software versions will be number 26.

The problem of this logic is that they have done the same with the rest of their product lines, regardless of when they have been launched. Thus, the current versions of the Apple ecosystem are as follows: iOS 18, Ipados 18, Macos 15, Watchos 11 and Visionos 2. Come on, a mess. Apple’s intention is to unify all its product ranges, that is, that all new software versions will carry number 26. And why the 26? For the year (yes, iOS 26 will arrive in September 25, but in practice “you will live” more time in 2026).

Samsung Did It First

It is not the first time that we see a change like that of iOS 26. Samsung already did when in 2020 They made the jump of Samsung Galaxy S10 to the Samsung Galaxy S20. Since then the number has been increasing year after year, so in 2026 we will have the Galaxy S26.

Apple’s change can make all the meaning -it is easier to communicate, it is better understood and allows us to locate immediately the year in which each version was presented. But it is also true that they arrive a little late and that starting this unification with the 26 makes it A very high and less manageable starting figure.

There is also the detail that Each operating system is still called in a different way. Other brands in the sector have also unified nomenclature (Samsung did it with One UI, Xiaomi with Hyperos or Huawei with Harmonyos), although it does not seem that Apple will follow that path, at least not for the moment.
