5 years of development has invested the 4MHz study in developing ‘Malasombra’, an ambitious video game developed entirely for the legendary Nes of Nintendo. With the date of departure scheduled in the second quarter of the year, the game is already beginning to perform in places such as the IBI Vintage Museum, in Alicante, on February 15.
A fantasy in 8 bits. ‘Malasombra ‘moves us to a fantasy world with an argument that is pure Lore eighties: Pirou is an aspiring magician who sees how the evil bad sorcerer snatches his beloved on the same day of his wedding and makes all guests in toad. You will have to gather the pages of a powerful grimoire that will allow you to acquire skills through transmutations to defeat the villain.
4MHz, devotees of the eighties. Behind Malasombra is this study specialized in the development of 8 -bit video games, which usually accompany physical editions in the original formats. So far they have specialized in titles for Amstrad CPC as ‘Goodbye to the caste’ and its sequel, ‘The Lost Treasury of Cuauhtémoc’, ‘Profanation 2’, ‘Baba’s Palace’ and ‘Operation Alexandra’, an excellent Survival Horror With touches of Metridvania set in an abandoned Nazi base, and that deserved international fame.

Origins in the microororders. The first steps of ‘Malasombra’ are given, significantly, in Amstrad CPC, like the rest of the studio games. But the project was soon growing in ambition, to the point that in October 2018 they began to do graphic and programming tests to pass it to NES and thus have more technical slack. It was the first time they tried on this new platform, but the results were positive and launched into the Nintendo console.
Relear to program. The biggest challenge for the team, as they count, has been to adapt their knowledge to the programming for NES, an environment to which they were not used. On a technical level, the game has demanded to develop a new C and assembly engine, on the Nesdoug’s neslib base. They have also created specific tools of the game to improve performance, which explains that development has prolonged so many years.
The complete pack. Developing a cartridge adapted to the needs of the game has not been easy, so it counts 4MHz, and they have had to create a support with two specific properties. On the one hand, store games without the need for a pile fed WRAM memory, which does not have to worry about the battery; on the other, a system that replaces the specific chips of Mappers Classics, which guarantees the compatibility of ‘malasombra’ with modern emulators.
