Microsoft is about to say goodbye to one of the most emblematic functions of Windows. In an attempt to modernize its operating system, the technology giant will leave behind a key component that we see since the times of Windows 95. The move not only forgets a part of Microsoft’s history, but further reduces customization options.
According to a report from Neowin, Microsoft will remove access to free themes for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The company updated their support page warning that it will remove the website for downloading official themes for the operating system. This website offers a catalog with dozens of topics organized by various categories.
“This page containing links to download Windows themes is deprecated and will be retired soon. We recommend that you download the latest themes directly from the Microsoft Store for the best experience,” Microsoft says. The Windows Themes website also includes a section that warns the end of support for Windows 10 starting October 14, 2025.
A glance through the catalog is enough to realize thate Microsoft does not update it constantly. Proof of this are the themes of Gears of War 3 either Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocola game and movie that came out over a decade ago.

Microsoft begins limiting access to Windows Themes
The end of Windows Themes as we knew them began with Windows 8. The shift in focus towards a minimalist, tile-based interface killed off Aero and visual customization. Microsoft brought back some features with the arrival of Windows 10, although the themes were never the same.
Yes ok the topics lost relevancesome users continue to install them on their computers. Unlike Windows 98, the current themes no longer modify cursors, sounds, or window layouts. Modern versions only allow you to adjust the colors, transparency and include wallpapers that are displayed in slides.
The removal of the Temas website closes a chapter in the history of its operating system. Now, the only way to download them will be through the Microsoft Store, a place that offers few options to segment the search. Another option is to install a third-party tool like WindowBlindswhich allows turn your Windows 11 into a modern version of XP.
