After endless leaks and rumors, Samsung has made a new folding format official. Not “new” as such, but different. It is a foldable made, according to Samsung, to adapt to how we see content.

This format is usually known as “passport type” and it is something that we have already seen, to a certain extent, in the OPPO Find N (Apple is also expected to adopt it at the end of the year in its much leaked iPhone Fold). The Korean firm thus puts on the table a triad of foldingeach one focused on a different audience and the Fold8 being the most generalist. With the introductions made, let’s get to know them better.

The new passport format

To date, Samsung’s Fold-type folding devices (and almost all brands, really) have tried to be a conventional mobile phone that multiplies by two. The external screen is like that of a regular mobile phone and, when we open it, its size doubles in a screen that borders on the 1:1 format (almost square).

The problem is that this format, which is maintained, by the way, in the Fold8 Ultra, is very good for multitasking and productivity, but it involves certain sacrifices in the consumption of multimedia content. The reason? A video on YouTube is usually in 16-18:9, which, on an almost 1:1 screen, means having two huge black bands above and below the content.

The passport format partially solves this problem: it sacrifices diagonal on the main screen in exchange for offering a more rectangular folding screen, ideal for watching a video, a movie or playing games in widescreen format. In the case of Samsung, the main screen (the one we use when it is folded) has a 10:16 format.

The folding screen, for its part, has a 4:3 format. Without being completely panoramic, the upper and lower black bands will be a lot, but much smaller. If we put it vertically, we have a size similar to that of a small book, which makes it particularly comfortable for reading or browsing.

When it comes to the hinge, Samsung boasts a new technology called Flex Titanium (available in all three folding versions). According to the company, this new hinge combines a titanium alloy film with an “improved” titanium plate that, on paper, helps reinforce the screen support, absorb pressure and reduce crease visibility. This has been one of the most controversial points of foldables historically, the fold and its wrinkle.

Speaking of specifications

If we talk about inches, the main screen has a 5.5 inch diagonalwhile the folding one amounts to 7.6 inches. In both cases we find a QXGA+ resolution and a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz. They are, therefore, fast screens with a more than acceptable resolution. As far as brightness is concerned, 3,000 peak nits, more than enough to use it in full sun and play HDR.

One of the things that caught the most attention Galaxy S26 Ultra was the anti-glare and anti-glare screen. For physical and space reasons, Samsung cannot implement this technology in the folding ones (this specific model is 4.5 mm thick when unfolded), but it does claim to have introduced a low-reflective finish that, in theory, should reduce glare when the sun shines in front of it.

Maximum power

Samsung has not skimped on power in its new foldable. In fact, in a somewhat complicated context for RAM and storagethe Korean firm has put all its efforts into action. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has 12 GB of RAM in its versions with 256 or 512 GB of internal storage, and 16 GB in the most powerful version, which is the one with 1 TB capacity. It won’t be for storage, of course.

The heart of the terminal is a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, or what is the same, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with a lightweight overclock which, on paper, provides extra performance. It will also be responsible for moving some AI tools, namely Now Brief (contextual information), Now Nudge (an assistant for taking actions) and the editing suite. However, Samsung’s approach is hybrid: local+cloud.

What is really interesting is the battery, which amounts to 4,800 mAh (slightly more than in the Fold7) with 45W fast charging and reverse wireless charging. It is still not the highest charging power on the market, but with that capacity it is enough. What these figures seem to imply is that Samsung continues to resist making the leap to carbon silicon.

Finally, it should be noted that the Z Fold8 and its two brothers see the light with Android 17One UI 9 already pre-installed and the promise of seven years of updates. There are no big new features in One UI, beyond what is already known Quick Share compatibility with AirDrop.

Four cameras and no telephoto

We are approaching the end, but not before talking about photography. Samsung has reserved the telephoto for its Ultra model, so the Galaxy Z Fold8 is left with two rear cameras, a selfie on the main screen and another selfie on the secondary screen. In the case of the rear, we have two 50 megapixel sensors with angular and wide-angle lenses, with the wide-angle lens having optical image stabilization.

The selfie cameras are practically identical: 10 megapixels and f/2.2 aperture. The only difference is that the front one has a 100º field of vision and the front one has 85º. In any case, the beauty of the folding format is the possibility of using the rear camera, the 50 megapixel one, to take selfies and see the result in real time on the screen. Once you get used to taking selfies like this, there is no turning back, says a foldable user.

As an interesting novelty, the Galaxy Z Fold has dual recording (to record both sides of the camera) and a new function, My FanCam, which automatically tracks the subject and keeps it framed according to our preferences.
