Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are in the prelude to a historical feat: become the first team of the modern era of the NFL in achieving a consecutive tricampeonato.
After winning the Super Bowls LVII and LVIII, the Chiefs point to the unpublished achievement in a league where no one has succeeded since the days of the Green Bay Packers of Vince Lombardi in the seasons from 1965 to 1967.
Three pedat in the United States
Achieving a tricampeonato is not only uncommon in the NFL, but also in the other major sports leagues in the United States.
The last time a team got it in any sport was more than 20 years ago, when Los Angeles Lakers, led by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, dominated the NBA between 2000 and 2002.
In the NFL, only two teams have achieved three consecutive titles. The Packers did it first between 1929 and 1931, when the champion was decided by the best record of the regular season.
Decades later, in the Era of the Super Bowl, the Packers de Lombardi won the championship in 1965 and then the first two Super Bowls, heating their legacy as a legendary team.
Since then, no team has managed to replicate that feat in a league characterized by parity and constant talent replacement.
Legendary teams with tricampeonates
The challenge of the Chiefs is not only to overcome the history of the NFL, but to join an exclusive list of teams that have reached the glory three consecutive years in American sports:
Oakland Athletics (MLB, 1972-74): Led by Reggie Jackson, dominated baseball with a team full of talent and personality.
Montreal Canadiens (NHL, 1976-79): They won four consecutive Stanley glasses in an era dominated by discipline and talent under the direction of Scotty Bowman.
New York Islanders (NHL, 1980-83): with a solid defensive structure and a powerful offensive, they achieved an impressive streak in the 1980s.
Chicago Bulls (NBA, 1991-93 and 1996-98): Michael Jordan took the Bulls to two tricampeonates in one of the most dominant dynasties in the history of sport.
New York Yankees (MLB, 1998-2000): In the modern era of free agency, the Yankees cemented their place as one of the most successful baseball franchises.
Los Angeles Lakers (NBA, 2000-02): Phil Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant marked the beginning of the 21st century with their domain in the NBA.
