The technological world usually starts from the assumption that we can all use our hands, but more than 100 million people with reduced mobility are excluded from that equation.
The Spanish startup Aurax has decided to solve this problem with Mouthx, an oral controller that allows anyone (has their reduced mobility or not) interact with mobiles, tablets and computers without using the hands.
“In Aurax we have developed a hands -free, intraoral control device, consisting of two Joysticksone that acts with the jaw and another with the tongue. We also have Head Tracking For secondary controls, “explains Narcís Codina, founder of Aurax, during an interview at 4yfn Barcelona, the entrepreneurship event starts from the MWC 2025.
Mouthx’s origin is deeply personal. The project arose when Codina met Armando Folgado, who has pentaplejía due to a spinal cord injury. Armando, current partner of Aurax, became inspiration to develop this technology that wants to transform the lives of millions of people.
Precision that exceeds current limitations
What distinguishes Mouthx from other solutions, according to its creators, is Its precision and versatility. “We use a technology from Joysticks that measures the magnetic field. In the end the accuracy is 500 points on each axis, in a millimeter of radius. In the end we do not move the tongue or the jaw more than a millimeter, “says Codina.

This wireless oral controller is an integral solution for those who have had very limited options. “They (in reference to users with reduced mobility) cannot control a mobile, apart from the fact that it is only with the voice. And as a computer, they use tobii, which is like a Eye Trackerin the end is two axes, it is a mouse with one click. And you have to click twice to select the second button, “explains the founder.
Tobii is an old acquaintance of XAtaka:
The difference in Mouthx with respect to what is raised by teams such as Tobii is remarkable: while current solutions allow only a basic interaction, Mouthx offers total control. “We in the end have made a device that allows you the total control of a mobile and a computer. And in fact as we also emulate, we can be like a joystick, we can be up to a Gamepad“Narcís adds.
The device works with three axes in each joystick, which allows three -dimensional precision. “It’s 3D, it’s not two axes and click,” says Codina. This technology makes it possible for users to perform precise movements with hardly any effort.
Easy to use, quick to learn
One of the pleasant surprises that the Aurax team has taken has been The speed with which users learn to use the device. “The learning curve of users so far, we put both the equipment and Beta Testers as Focus Groups That we have done, it goes between fifteen minutes and an hour that most to learn. That is, go through the learning curve and use a mobile and a computer in full, “says Codina.
The device, similar to an invisible dental splint, is manufactured for each user by means of an oral scanner. This customization is an inevitable friction today, but guarantees comfort and precision, even allowing to speak normally while used.
Although Mouthx was born thinking about people with functional diversity, The company has discovered that its technology has much broader applications of the initially planned.
“We were surprised, there are people without mobility problems that interest more than we expected. In the end there are always uses that one can get him,” says the founder. “We are realizing that for a neurosurgeon it is like having two more hands. Or a pilot you can use Google Maps With your hands on the steering wheel and looking where you have to look. A chef, a musician, a creative, or an engineer who wants more control, “he says as more use cases.
The power of the device is not only in its precision, but also in Its ability to execute multiple commands simultaneously. “There are many solutions that allow you several buttons, several commands, but not simultaneous, you have to click one or the other. We allow you three tongue axes, three axes in jaw and three axes in the head. And this is quite powerful,” he explains.
For Gamersthis capacity represents a competitive advantage, according to the founder: “You with your jaw can have eight commands and with your tongue too.” Eight are also the hours that your battery lasts, rechargeable connecting Mouthx to your case.
Mouthx is accompanied by a highly configurable application that allows total customization. “We have a very configurable app that allows the user to choose which devices that are matched at the same time,” Codina explains.
Users can create different configurations according to their specific needs: “You have your settings for your computer, one in general for Office or one for a specific program, and one for … for whatever you want. Well, you can jump from each other directly from the device.”
An imminent pilot and launch
The Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona He has started a pilot study to evaluate Mouthx’s usability in people with reduced mobility. Dr. Lluïsa Montesinos, head of the unit of core injured, expects the device to offer greater autonomy and independence to patients.

The device will be available for presale from the end of March Through the Aurax website. “Now people can point like Beta Testerbut at the end of the month they can point, and make orders. Can buy through Pre-Orders With a 30% discount, that is, for 1,000 euros instead of 1,300, delivering to seven months seen, towards October, “says Codina.
Initial marketing will be online, due to the personalized nature of the product: “As the device is personalized, both design and manufacturing now requires a buffer scannerany dentist can do it, the dentist who has a reference, because they go there, this scanner is sent to us and we design. “
The company has recently closed a financing round close to one million euroswith an assessment of five million. Its investors include Ellis Fuller, founder of SCRM, and Quique Martínez, CEO of Plain Concepts.
For more than one hundred million people in the world with reduced mobility in the upper limbs, Mouthx represents not only a technological advance, but also A promise of independence and autonomy in the digital world.
