The expected digitalization of the National Identity Document (DNI) has taken a key step today. This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers has approved The regulation that establishes the basis for the implementation of this document in digital format.
Thus, full validity is granted to the document in digital formatprovided that the holder carries it through the official application ‘Midni’. It is not a complete substitution of the physical ID, but the digital version will act as a virtual replica that will identify us before the authorities.
The digital ID. The Interior Ministry, in collaboration with the National Police, has detailed how the application ‘Mi DNI’ will work. This will allow access to our National Identity Document and be accredited to public and private entities.
“With the DNI on the mobile, identity identity can be accredited in person, but for the moment it will not be used to do so through the Internet, to use it as an electronic travel document for border step, to prove identity in other countries or make telematic efforts of authentication and/or electronic signature.” Home Office.
This digital ID will serve any public or private registration process, acting with the same legal validity of the physical document. The digital ID will carry an QR code incorporated, similar to what we already saw with the digitally legalized driving license in the Midgt app.
How exactly does it work? Through the ‘MIDNI’ application, the user will be requesting their identity data from the National Police so that they can be requested by third parties. The QR, which will have limited validity (will only be valid for a few minutes), will be signed and sealed by said police force.
What can I do with Midni. The Interior Ministry itself indicates that the digital DNI will act the same as the physicist, allowing identity accreditation in the face of face -to -face procedures, establishing any type of legal relationship, writing signature, opening of bank accounts, realization of commercial transactions and, in the future (2026) telematic efforts.
In other words, the legality of the digital ID is the same as the physical ID, and it is expected that by 2026 it will be possible to perform all kinds of procedures, both face -to -face and online, with it.

A curious fact is that users can choose what data they appear after showing the QR, with three options available.
- DNI + Age: It will show photography, name and majority.
- Simple ID: will show photography, name, surname, sex and validity of DNI.

The margin time is set in a period of twelve months so that private administrations and entities adopt the necessary measures for their proper functioning. During this period, its acceptance will not be mandatory, a point to take into account in this moment of transition.
